Jabra Talk 5 (BT2046) bluetooth headset review

Many months ago, I needed a replacement Bluetooth headset for taking calls when driving and when in other situations in which my hands are busy. My eventual choice was the Jabra Talk 5, a simple, compact traditional headset.
To be more precise, I purchased the Jabra BT20146, which has since been renamed as the Jabra Talk 5. It is exactly the same device. It just got an easier, trendier, less Star Trek-like name. I mean, who wants to call a consumer product by the name, BT2046. It sounds like R2-D2.

Jabra Talk 5 BT2046 review

The Talk 5 is an in-ear headset and so can be worn without the earhook. I was a bit skeptical about how well that would work, but I did try it on without the hook and had no problems with it for the most part. After the initial fears that it would fall off, I got used to having it hang in there by itself.
jabra bt2046 review
Audio quality is good. It isn’t horrible and neither it is spectacular. But it is good enough for most scenarios excpet the noisiest.

No A2DP Profile

If you want a Bluetooth headset that supports media playback i.e. listening to music from your phone, this is not one. It does not not support A2DP, which is the BT profile that makes audio streaming possible. The BT2046 headset uses the older Bluetooth 2.1 standard. This model is strictly for calls.

One Multi-purpose Button

It has only one button, the horizontal strip with “Jabra” inscribed on it – and that is used both as a power button and as an Answer/End call button. Press and hold it to power it on and off. When a call is incoming, tap it to answer the call. To end an ongoing call, use the same acction – a tap on the button.
The LED light that lights up in blue to indicate charging is also located on this same button button. It also flashes the same colour to indicate an incoming call.
The Jabra Talk 5 does not have volume buttons. To control in-call volume, you have to use your connected phone’s volume buttons.

What will the Jabra talk 5 cost you? $19.99 only. It is available on online stores like Jumia, Amazon and others, as well as at brick-and-mortar retail stores.

Get unlimited 4G mobile hotspot worldwide with KiMiFi K5 MiFi

The idea of an unlimited 4G mobile hotspot that I can use when travelling in 130 countries caught my attention immediately. If you are a traveller too, it has yours. Wondafone says KiMiFi K5 MiFi provides just that.

One of the biggest hassles of international travel is getting connected on arrival at your destination country. Free WiFi at international airports has eased that hassle a little bit, but once you are out of the airport, you are on your own once again.
You have to get a local SIM card and slot it into your phone, or roam and bear the exhorbitant costs involved. Whichever way you go, you ave to deal with the problem.
KiMiFi K5 MiFi is being promoted and marketed as a cloud-based device that keeps you connected to the top 3 4G networks in each country where it works.

How does the unlimited 4G mobile hotspot work?

After purchasing your KiMiFi K5 MiFi,  download and install the KiMiFi K5 app on your phone. It is available for both Android and iOS devices. You need to create your kiMiFi account and activate the device by scanning a QR code on the inside label.
Now, you are ready to travel. Before each trip, login to the app to buy the data package that you want and pack your KiMiFi K5 MiFi.
On arrival at your destination country, power on your KiMiFi device, and wait for the signal light to come on. The light will blink at first but then stay on steady after a while. Your unlimited 4G mobile hotspot is ready and you can connect your smartphone, tablet or laptop for use.
To manage your KiMiFi device and hotspot, browse tohttp://192.168.43.1, and login with user name ‘admin’ and password ‘admin’.
The promoters also say they are making available a 24-hour multilingual customer service so you can reach them for help should you face a problem with the MiFi device or unlimited 4G mobile hotspot service.

KiMiFi K5 MiFi specs and price

When will it be available?

Around 10th of May, 2019.

What does KiMiFi K5 MiFi and the unlimited 4G mobile hotspot service cost?

The prices of the device and data have not been announced, but there is no subscription for data. The unlimited 4G mobile hotspot service is available on a Pay-as-you-go rate, so you pay a flat rate daily.
But you can sign up right away on their Indiegogo page to get 57% discount on launch day.
I do imagine that this will be a pricey device, even if the data rates are more pocket-friendly than standard data roaming rates. It reminds me of CloudCover, which offers something similar with coverage in over 100 countries. If my memory serves me right, the Mifi device cost a whopping N100,000 when I checked last year.

Still, it just might be worth it all. I love the idea of making Internet connectivity seamless during International travel, especially if this is truly an unlimited 4G mobile hotspot, as marketed. Sometimes, marketing is one thing and the product a different thing.
I have the KiMiFi K5 app downloaded already and I have signed up as well. I am looking forward to see what Wondafone comes up with in terms of pricing.

Nokia 6.1 Plus and 5.1 Plus have charging port issues, users complain

There has been a deluge of reports of a Nokia 6.1 Plus charging port problem. The Nokia 5.1 Plus has not been spared either. Nokia 5.1 Plus and Nokia 6.1 Plus were announced on the same day in July 2018. And being in the same class of devices, chances are that they share similar components.
What is more interesting is that both devices have a USB-C port. And users of both phones are complaining about issues with their phone ports.

Nokia 6.1 Plus charging port problem reports from Facebook

Here are some reports from Facebook:
Facebook user, Chowkidaar Jhonny, from Delhi in Inida, says:
A very big problem with nokia iis their type-c port,
Nd its getting damaged automatically after 3-4 months
Another users, Chaitanya Kothakota, says:
My speaker is very low after three months buying and type c is loose in phone
And from Munavir Ismail:
Charging port not fucking working.
The reports are very similar. In summary, the charging port gets loose and stops functioning after a few months of usage.

Nokia 6.1 Plus charging port problem reports from Nokia Phones Community

A user suibmitted a complaint[1] about the issue on the Nokia phones community:
Charging gets connected and disconnected on its own. The phone is new and I insert only Type – C OTG and charging cable that’s all. I maintain my one well. What should I do?
Many others users have responded to his complaint to say they are experiencing the same thing.
Of course, not all Nokia 6.1 Plus users are experiencing this problem. Many others report not having any such issues.
It does seem that there are batches of the model that have this issue from the factory. It is a smiliar story with the Nokia 5.1 Plus[2].

What to do about your Nokia 6.1 Plus charging port problem

Take it to an official Nokia phone service centre to have it fixed. Do not attempt to fix it yourself and do not take it to road-side technicians, as this may invalidate your warranty. Being a factory issue, Nokia should fix it free of charge to you at their authorized service centres.

If you own a Nokia 5.1 Plus or a Nokia 6.1 Plus, what has your experience been with the charging port?

Xiaomi Mi Compact Bluetooth Speaker 2 review

Mister Mobility reviews the Xiaomi Mi Compact Bluetooth Speaker 2, a pocketable cylindrical gadget that features a classy parametric speaker mesh cover, Bluetooth 4.2 with A2DP/AVRCP/SPP profiles, a built-in microphone, and a 480 mAh battery.
I was at the Xiaomi Nigeria product launch yesterday afternoon at Eko Hotel and Suites. The only devices launched were Redmi Note 7 and Redmi 7. Both have 3 variants each, so effectively 6 devices, if we want to stretch things a little. If interested in the prices of these smartphones and their variants, I did return home with a goodie bag that contained the Mi Compact Bluetooth Speaker 2 launched in India a few months ago – November 2018 specifically.
Also known by the product name, MDZ-28-DI, this is an interesting piece of art. It has that distinctive Mi look and the parametric speaker mesh touch is as tasteful as it gets. This is a pure Bluetooth affiar. There is no 3.5mm audio jack support or a slot for a memory card.

Xiaomi Mi Compact Bluetooth Speaker 2 performance

Having seen the specs and accessories, the next question is, What is the real-life performance of the Mi MDZ-28-DI like?
The power button is at the bottom side of the device, and that is the only button you will find on it.
Pairing it with the Galaxy S9 Plus was easy, standard Bluetooth fare: I turned on the speaker, scanned for it on the phone and paired. I played one of my favourite music tracks on it to see what it sounds like on the Mi Compact 2.
Mind-blowing. I ran a few music playback tests betweeen it and the bigger Havit Bluetooth speaker, and the Mi Compact Bluetooth Speaker 2 beat the latter effortlessly. Everyone present was wowed at how this smaller speaker could produce better quality audio and louder volume.

The the Mi Compact Bluetooth Speaker 2 next to the Havit HV-SK570BT Bluetooth Speaker

Every time I put on the speaker, it automatically connects to my phone, which is as it should. There is a microphone built in, so the speaker can be used to handle calls. And in China, this supports Xiao AI (a virtual assistant), so you can interact with it by voice.
The single button used to power on/off the speaker also can be used to accept and end phone calls when you use it for voice calls.
While paired, you can press the button to resume the last track you were playing, and press it again to pause it. Press and hold the button to power off/on.
The Mi Compact Bluetooth Speaker 2 supports battery level indicator, so that if you check your Bluetooth menu in your phone, you can view the battery level of the speaker.
It is also a much less complicated Bluetooth speaker to use. Audio quality and volume are not its only strengths. Simplicity and ease of use are others, not to mention the stunning design.

Xiaomi Mi Compact Bluetooth Speaker 2 Price

With such good design and performance, one would expect it to cost an arm and a leg. The official price is Rs. 799 (in India where it has been launched). This is about $11 or NGN4,000.
You can get the Mi compact speaker 2 to purchase from Amazon India, Flipkart and other retailers. Xiaomi Nigeria officials say that non-smartphone products will be introduced to Nigeria over time. This might prove to be a popular one in these parts should it get introduced here.

Wireless chargers: the advantages and disadvantages

Wireless charging and wireless chargers are relatively new technology in the mobile space. It allows you to charge your smartphone without having to plug a cable to it. However, a cable is involved in a different way. We explain how it works below, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using one.

Wireless charging involves the use of a charging pad, plate, pillow, or pod, which itself is connected to a power source by a cable. It is the last mile of the charging process that is wireless – you place your compatible phone on the pad and it gets charged via electromagnetic waves.
Not all smartphones have wireless charging capabilities, which is why only compatible phones will work with a wireless charger. So, the first step is to make sure that your smartphone supports wireless charging. For more details, see our earlier article, How Wireless Charging Works.

The advantages of using a Wireless Charger

Convenience: The key advantage of charging your phone wirelessly is the convenience of not plugging in a cable. Just drop it on the plate and go about your work (or play). If it rings, you pick it up, and when done, drop it. You have no need to worry about getting entangled with a cable.
Power Surge Protection: A second advantage is more applicable to people who live and work in areas prone to power surges. The absence of a direct cable connection provides some protection for the smartphone in the event of a power surge. This is because “the wireless charger cannot pass increased voltages on to your smartphone” [1]. At worst, the charging pad gets damaged, but your smartphone stays unharmed. This makes using a wireless charger safer for your smartphone than charging directly from a power outlet.
Fast Charging: Wireless charging pads charge as fast as cables do. It depends on the rating of the charger you buy. An 18W wireless charger is as fast as an 18W cable charger. So, when shopping for a wireless charging pad, be sure to check for its rating. That way you don’t end up with one that is of lower rating than your phone supports.
Wear-and-tear Protection: Using a wireless charger prevents wear and tear on the charging port of your smartphone. Charging port damages are some of the most common faults in mobile phones. The less you have to plug in and pull out a USB port, the longer the life of your smartphone.
Wireless chargers: the advantages and disadvantages 2

The disadvantages of using a Wireless Charger

Higher Cost: Wireless charging pads are more expensive than regular chargers of the same ratings, so you will spend more to enjoy the convenience and benefits of wireless charging.
No Multitasking: When using a wireless charger, you cannot use your phone at the same time, because you have to lift the phone off the pad to use it. Once you lift it, charging stops. This is unlike how you can plug your phone to a normal charger and still use it at the same time.

The future is wireless

In all, wireless charging offers more advantages than disadvantages. But as with all things, the benefits that it offers may not be high up on your list of needs.
To get a wireless charger or not? Well, the first factor is whether or not your smartphone supports the technology. Then you decide whether getting one is worth the money and the effort or not. As with some things though, you never know how much you might like it until you take the plunge.
Wireless charging technology is here to stay though. And we will see wireless chargers evolve in the years to come. Welcome to the future.
