Google ‘outfoxed’ Firefox alleges Former Mozilla VP

A former Mozilla executive has accused Google of repeatedly and continuously sabotaging Firefox for years in Windows 10.

Jonathan Nightingale, a former General Manager and Vice President of the Firefox group at Mozilla, said that Google was the company’s biggest partner during his 8-year tenure at Mozilla.

“Our revenue share deal on search drove 90% of Mozilla’s income,” he tweeted.

However, in a series of tweets that followed Nightingale described the changes and issues between Google and Mozilla that happened after the release of Google Chrome.

“When I started at Mozilla in 2007 there was no Google Chrome, and most folks we spoke with inside [Google] were Firefox fans,” Nightingale mentioned in a Twitter threadon April 13.

“When Chrome launched things got complicated, but not in the way you might expect. They had a competing product now, but they didn’t cut ties, break our search deal – nothing like that. In fact, the story we kept hearing was, ‘We’re on the same side. We want the same things’,” the former Mozilla exec said.

“I think our friends inside Google genuinely believed that. At the individual level, their engineers cared about most of the same things we did. Their product and design folks made many decisions very similarly, and we learned from watching each other.

“But Google as a whole is very different than individual googlers. Google Chrome ads started appearing next to Firefox search terms. Gmail & [Google] Docs started to experience selective performance issues and bugs on Firefox. Demo sites would falsely block Firefox as ‘incompatible’,” he said.

“All of this is stuff you’re allowed to do to compete, of course. But we were still a search partner, so we’d say ‘hey what gives?’ And every time, they’d say, ‘oops. That was accidental. We’ll fix it in the next push in 2 weeks.’

“Over and over. Oops. Another accident. We’ll fix it soon. We want the same things. We’re on the same team. There were dozens of oopses. Hundreds maybe?

“I’m all for ‘don’t attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence’ but I don’t believe Google is that incompetent. I think they were running out the clock. We lost users during every oops. And we spent effort and frustration every clock tick on that instead of improving our product. We got outfoxed for a while and by the time we started calling it what it was, a lot of damage had been done,” Nightingale added.

While Nightingale later stated that more than anyone Mozilla is responsible for Firefox’s collapse, this is not the first time a Firefox team member has made allegations against Google. In July 2018, Mozilla’s Technical Program Manager Chris Peterson accused Google of deliberately slowing down YouTube performance 5x slower in Firefox and Edge by switching to a JavaScript library for YouTube that they were aware was not supported by Firefox.

Microsoft’s latest patch crashes antivirus programs of Sophos, Avira, Avast, McAfee

Microsoft’s recent security update affecting anti-malware software from Sophos, Avira, Avast, McAfee

Microsoft’s recently released April 9 monthly rollup update is causing compatibility issues with anti-malware software from Sophos, Avira, ArcaBit, Avast, and McAfee.

The antivirus titles that are affected are Sophos Endpoint and Sophos Enterprise Console, Avira antivirus software, ArcaBit antivirus software, Avast and McAfee Security Threat Prevention 10.x & McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention 8.0. The update (KB4493472) is affecting PCs running Windows 7, 8.1, Server 2008 R2, Server 2012, Server 2012 R2, and also likely Windows 10.

After the April 9 security update, the systems running the aforementioned antivirus software are either failing to start or having sluggish performances or become completely unresponsive at the restart.

According to Microsoft, the issue could be likely due to a bug introduced with the April security update that impacted the Kerberos implementation in several versions of Windows.

For those unaware, Kerberos is a computer network authentication protocol used in a huge number of open-source and commercial products. It works on the basis of tickets to allow nodes communicating over a non-secure network to prove their identity to one another in a secure manner.

Microsoft has currently added a block to this update for Sophos, Avira, and ArcaBit users that will stop it from being installed on PCs with affected antivirus software. McAfee is still under investigation.

“Microsoft and McAfee have identified an issue on devices with McAfee Endpoint Security (ENS) Threat Prevention 10.x or McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention (Host IPS) 8.0 installed. It may cause the system to have slow startup or become unresponsive at restart after installing this update,” Microsoft explains in its support page.

Several vendors have issued warning to its customers regarding the bug in the monthly roll-up update.

“After installing certain Microsoft Windows updates… Sophos has received reports of computers failing to boot. Sophos is actively investigating this issue and will update this article when more information is available,” Sophos said in a note that it sent to its customers earlier this week. However, system running Sophos Intercept X are not affected by the issue, Sophos notes.

McAfee suggested that the problem could be due to a change that Microsoft made to the Windows Client-Server Runtime Subsystem (csrss.exe).

“Changes in the Windows April 2019 update for Client Server Runtime Subsystem (CSRSS) introduced a potential deadlock with ENS. McAfee is investigating this issue and will resolve it in a future update. A Proof of Concept (POC) build to test a fix is currently available. Escalate a Service Request to Technical Support to obtain the POC,” McAfee wrote. “McAfee is investigating this issue and will resolve it in a future update.”

On the other hand, vendors like ArcaBit and Avast have published updates that address the problem.

TikTok app removed from Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store

China’s Bytedance Technology’s hugely popular video app, TikTok has been removed from Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store in India following a local court’s decision. However, users who have already installed the TikTok app on their devices can continue to use the service.

For those unaware, the Madras High Court on April 3 had directed the government to ban downloading of the video-sharing mobile app, TikTok, as it exposed children to illicit content bordering on nudity, obscenity, including pornography. However, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, argued for a stay on banning the app saying it is causing irreparable damage to the company. ByteDance had earlier challenged the state court’s order in India’s apex Supreme Court.

In its hearing on Tuesday (April 16), the Madras High Court refused to suspend the ban on future downloads of TikTok app in India and the Supreme Court too refused to stay the ban. Following the order, the Ministry of Electronics and Information (MeitY) directed Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Apple Inc. to remove TikTok from their App stores. The court also restricted media houses from telecasting videos made using the TikTok app.

“It is evident from media reports that pornography and inappropriate contents are made available in this kind of cyber applications. The children are exposed to strangers and there is a possibility of the photographs, and other private details of the children are being landed in the hands of predators or third parties,” the bench hearing the case said.

Responding to the Madras High Court, TikTok said, “We have faith in the Indian judicial system and we are optimistic about an outcome that would allow over 120 million monthly active users in India to continue using TikTok to showcase their creativity and capture the moments that matter in their everyday lives. We are committed to continuously enhancing our existing measures and introducing additional technical and moderation processes as part of our ongoing commitment to our users in India.”

Last week, ByteDance-owned TikTok had removed six million videos from its platform that violated user agreements and community guidelines. It also introduced an age limit feature for new users, that allows only those aged 13 and above to login and create an account.

The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing of the case again on April 22, where ByteDance can make a point as to why the ban should be withdrawn.

Facebook admits storing “millions” of Instagram passwords in plain text

In yet another shocking admission by Facebook, the company said that not “tens of thousands” but “millions” of Instagram users were actually affected by the password leak that happened last month.

Back then, Facebook had announced in a blog post dated March 21, 2019 that passwords were left in a “readable format”, which allowed at least 2,000 Facebook engineers and developers with access to the company’s internal systems to view the actual plain text passwords.

“This caught our attention because our login systems are designed to mask passwords using techniques that make them unreadable. We have fixed these issues and as a precaution will be notifying everyone whose passwords we found stored this way,” wrote Pedro Canahuati, Vice President, Engineering, Security and Privacy at Facebook.

Facebook had estimated that hundreds of millions of Facebook Lite users, tens of millions of other Facebook users, and tens of thousands of Instagram users were affected by the password leak.

However, on April 18, 2019, Facebook quietly updated the above blog post to revise the number of affected Instagram users from “tens of thousands” to “millions”.

“We discovered additional logs of Instagram passwords being stored in a readable format. We now estimate that this issue impacted millions of Instagram users. We will be notifying these users as we did the others,” said the social networking giant in an update. However, the company did not mention how many millions of accounts were impacted by the breach.

The company also says that the stored passwords were not internally abused or improperly accessed by their employees. “This is an issue that has already been widely reported, but we want to be clear that we simply learned there were more passwords stored in this way,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement.

While Facebook is not recommending users to change their passwords, it is, however, advisable to have the passwords changed for your own safety, considering the company’s long history of breaching user’s privacy and security.
